Abstract: This study investigated the effects of a semester-long extensive reading program on the general English proficiency of Japanese university-level EFL learners. The subjects, enrolled in one of four different EFL classes at Osaka Prefecture University, read more than 8 graded readers containing a total of 70,000 words or more over a three-month period. Two different versions of the Michigan Test were used as a pretest and a posttest in order to measure the increase of the students' English proficiency. Results showed that in three out of the four classes, there was a significant gain in their test scores. This indicates that extensive reading can be an effective means for providing plenty of input to Japanese EFL learners, for whom lack of sufficient exposure to English is a serious problem.
