Abstract: The auxiliary verb shi (賜) is used in polite expression. In this paper, we discuss the motivation and mechanism of the grammaticalization of 賜 in Kojiki after discussing the differences of 賜's usages in Kojiki and ancient Chinese documents. The auxiliation of 賜 is motivated by the omission of the object word. The original meaning, which was give something to somebody, continues to constrain the use of the auxiliary; 賜 means do something for somebody. The persistence of meaning allows the generalization of the intransitive verb from the transitive verb. Hence, the grammaticalization of 賜 can be illustrated as follows: [[Vt]+[賜]]>[Vt・賜]>[V・賜]
