This study was performed to clarify awareness of the activities of public health nurses and to discuss the role of community health nursing clinical practice in our teaching curriculum. A total of 376 items were extracted from a report about community health nursing clinical practice written by 14 groups consisting of 78 final-year students from our university. We then examined 168 items related to awareness of the activities of public health nurses that were common to each group. Awareness of the activities of public health nurses consisted of the following three categories: Recognition of the role of public health nurses, Evaluation of the activities of public health nurses, and Cooperation with other organizations. Students' awareness of the activities of public health nurses increased through practice, and they came to understand nursing as related to the community. In comparison with "public health nurse's essential ability and contents" reported by Kanagawa et aL, there were many items related to "Understanding and ability to support people (individuals and families) living in the community," but very few items related to "Community health development, revolution, and improvement ability." The results of this study should be taken into account in revising our teaching curriculum.
