Title: Thin-layer Chromatographic Studies on Quinoxalines Formed from Carbohydrate by the Reaction with o-Phenylenediamine in Alkaline Solution, with Special Emphasis on their Specific Color Development Depending on Substituent Structure

Abstract: Quinoxalines derived from carbohydrate by reaction with o-phenylenediamine in alkaline solution were tested thin-layer chromatographically. From D-glucose, 6 quinoxalines were chromatographically separated and from D-xylose 5 were obtained. Rf-Values and color development of the spots indicated that 5 quinoxalines coincided with each other for the two sugars. The color of quinoxaline spots was found to have some relation with the structures of the substituents. The quinoxalines derived by the reaction of o-phenylenediamine with an acid hydroly-sate of dextran was tested and the sturcture of the vicinity of the quinoxaline nucleus was verified by that using amylase to cleave the glucosidic linkage, the resulted smaller quinox-aline was identified with the isolated pure specimen by Rf-value and the developed color.
