抄録: Jiuweigui, a representative of the novels (狭邪小説) in the last years of Ching Dynasty, describes the dark side of the society, an atmosphere of the pleasure quarters in Shanghai. In those days, literary men were degraded because they often went to the prostitution houses to have sexual relations with harlots. These harlots were shrewd enough to deceive them and rob them of their money. The author of this novel, Zhang Chunfan (張春帆), was among such men. He was ashamed of his life, but he could do nothing about it. So,he thought of creating a literary man named Zhang Qiugu (章秋谷) in his novel and disclosing the evil aspects of the society, especially the literary society, at that time. He expected that would lead literary men into better ways of life. The main character of this novel, Zhang Qiugu was gifted with literary abilities, but his productions were not recognized as masterpieces. He had led a loose life in despair. He was not only at home with literature (文), but also good at martial arts (武) . He beat rascals and was wise enough not to be deceived by prostitutes. The aim of this paper is to prove that the image of the leading figure, Zhang Qiugu was the reflection of the literary men's corruption in those days and reflected the author's wish to make the society better.
